Recycling is important for many reasons. Often we promote recycling as a way to keep waste out of landfills. It is also important to remember that recycling recovers valuable raw materials. If we make aluminum cans from recycled cans, then we don't have to disturb the environment to mine aluminum. Finally, recycling reduces pollution and saves energy that would have been used when making product from 'virgin' or un-recycled raw materials.
Check out these facts about recycling:
- Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to keep a 100 watt light bulb lit for four (4) hours or a television running for three (3) hours.
- In 2006, approximately 100 billion beverage cans were sold in the United States. Only 45 billion of those cans were recycled.
- Since 1996, the aluminum can recycling rate has dropped 15%.
